On Tuesday, a court in Hamas ruled Gaza sentenced a man to death for collaborating with Israel, according to Ma’an News Agency.
The man, who is only identified as B.H, was ordered to death by hanging by the Gazan court. A date for the execution has not been set. The court will also allow the defendant to appeal against the verdict.
The unidentified defendant was found guilty of “collaboration with the Zionist occupation against the Palestinian people.” Under “Palestinian” law, collaboration with Israel is punishable by death.
The Hamas-run security services have been cracking down on collaborators in the Gaza Strip since the launch of a campaign to discourage working with Israeli intelligence.
UN human rights commissioner, Navi Pillay, had described the judicial process in Gaza as deeply flawed earlier in August. “I am concerned about the process by which death sentences are imposed by military and civilian courts in the Gaza Strip,” she said.
Pillay further stated, “Serious concerns have also been raised about ill-treatment and torture during interrogations of persons later sentenced to death.”
In the coming days, Hamas plans to execute another man who was convicted of killing three Palestinians in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza.
