Israeli swimmer Yakov Toumarkin has won his second silver medal in the 18th European Short Course Swimming Championships, going on in the Wingate Institute near Netanya.
On Sunday, Toumarkin won a silver medal in the 100 meter mixed personal swimming championship, losing by a nose to Sergei Pasikov of Russia. The gold medal winner completed the course in 52 seconds, while it took Toumarkin 52.62 seconds.
This is the third medal for Israel in the championships, which is being held for the first time in Israel. The yearly meet features swimmers from across Europe compete in 38 events in a short course (25 meter) pool.
The Russian-born Toumarkin, who first broke the Israeli 200 meter backstroke record in 2010, won another silver last Wednesday in the 200 meter backstroke competition. He was defeated by Polish competitor Radoslaw Kawecki, coming in second on Wednesday with a new personal record time of 1:49:84.
“I still can’t digest it. I was in total shock,” Toumarkin told Channel 2. “I took the first medal and broke the barrier of a minute and fifty seconds. The crowd gave me the push I needed.”
