Police are requesting that prosecutors files charges against Sheikh Khaled al-Mughrabi, a prominent preacher at the al-Aqsa Mosque.
Sheikh Mughrabi was arrested last week, after videos came out of him inciting violence against Jews while speaking in the mosque.
One of the videos, which Youtube has since taken down, showed Mughrabi claiming, “We will go after the Jews everywhere. They won’t escape us, they won’t be able to escape us. The Children of Israel will all be wiped out.”
The preacher’s lawyer says that his client was merely quoting from religious texts. “[Mughrabi] does not want to incite, and we want to prevent such situations,” he told Ynet. “It’s true that he is seen speaking in the video, but he says that it was the Prophet who said these things, and they have a source.”
Police have previously questioned Mughrabi after he was filmed claiming that Jews control the world’s wealth and pharmaceutical industry, which they use to spread diseases. He also said that Jews kidnap Gentile children for their blood.
